Dr Widdowson is a Consultant specialising in sports and exercise conditions at Schoen Clinic London.
Dr Widdowson trained at University College Hospital, London. He has over 25 years of experience in Sport and Exercise Medicine and is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine. Dr Widdowson is the Clinical Director for the MSc course in Sport and Exercise Medicine at the University of Bath, a postgraduate course for doctors training in Sport and Exercise Medicine. He is an Assessor for the General Medical Council for the specialty of Sport and Exercise Medicine. He is a tutor and examiner for the Immediate Care in Sport, a course for medical practitioners working pitch-side in sport.
He works at both national and international levels across many sports including gold medal Olympians and Paralympians to recreational sports persons. Dr Widdowson is the lead Sports Physician for West Bromwich Albion FC since 2018 working with the first team squad and Academy in the Premier League and now the Championship. He was previously the team doctor for Gloucester Rugby from 2016 to 2019 and for Bath Rugby from 2003 to 2015. He worked for England Rugby Football Union for 10 years and at present works for the Welsh Rugby Union. He has been the Premiership Rugby Clubs' medical representative on the Medical Advisory Group to the Professional Game Board. He was instrumental in setting up the role of the Independent Match Day Doctor (MDD) in Rugby Union in Concussion Management and is one of the MDDs at Twickenham.
Between 2018 and 2022 Dr Widdowson was also the Clinical Lead for the South West hub of the National Institute of Dance Medicine and Science and the Sports Medicine Physician at the world renowned Royal Ballet School providing care for elite ballet dancers. He also works with many track and field athletes, he is the TASS doctor for international athletes based at the University of Bath and was one of the lead SEM doctors trackside at the athletic track in the Olympic Stadium for the London Olympics.
He is a faculty member of the Immediate Care in Sport and was the Match Day Doctor for the Olympic Stadium in the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Dr Widdowson is experienced in cycling, working with professional international cyclists as well as the keen amateur, and is passionate about cycling and its benefit for health. He is the former medical director of Cyclissimo Ltd, an organisation dedicated to improving cyclists’ performance, having left to focus his time at Schoen Clinic London.
He is asked regularly to present nationally and internationally and has presented for three years at the Annual Meeting of the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science.
