Dr Joan Brunton

Dr Joan Brunton is a Consultant Psychiatrist with over two decades of expertise and dedication in the field of mental health care. At Schoen Clinic Chelsea, she specialises in the assessment and treatment of a wide range of mental health conditions, including eating disorders.

Dr Brunton went to medical school at United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, where she earned her medical degree in 1994. Complementing her medical education, she also secured an intercalated BSc in Psychology from University College London, demonstrating her multifaceted approach to understanding the complexities of human behaviour and wellbeing.

She began her training in Psychiatry in 1996 and following an SHO post in Eating Disorders under Professor Lacey at Atkinson Morley’s Hospital in 1998, she went on to complete her higher training as a lecturer in Eating Disorders at St George’s University of London.

Dr Brunton has been a Consultant Adult Psychiatrist in both Community and Inpatient Eating Disorder Services since 2005. She developed the Community Eating Disorders Service and Day Hospital at South West London and St George’s Mental Health Trust where she worked until 2015.

She has since worked on the Adult Eating Disorders Inpatient Unit at Roehampton Priory and became Clinical Director for the Eating Disorder Network in 2019. In addition to eating disorders, Dr Brunton also works with adult patients suffering from anxiety, relationship problems and mild to moderate depression. She has an interest in women’s health, in particular, issues related to infertility and menopause.

Dr Brunton takes a therapeutic approach to mental health and is trained in several therapeutic models including CBT, MANTRA, family carer skills and MBT whilst also using medication as and when necessary.

She enjoys the crossover of physical and mental health aiming to work holistically to incorporate psychological and physical approaches for the individual.
