Inpatient eating disorder treatment for adults in the north of England

Schoen Clinic York is a highly specialised inpatient hospital for adults suffering from eating disorders. Our multidisciplinary team work closely with their patients as part of a tried-and-tested treatment programme that ultimately aims to help them recover and regain their independence.

Our approach to treating eating disorders uses a recovery-focussed model which includes physical stabilisation, life skills and self-awareness training. We teach the importance of self-care and provide both group and individual therapy sessions. We help patients to transfer those skills outside of the hospital environment, preparing them for a healthy, fulfilled life back in their local community.

Our treatment programme is founded on the principle of patients recognising their own expertise in their own difficulties, needs and treatment. We believe effective treatment is based on the patient and the clinical team having a shared understanding and agreed treatment goals. Strong communication and information sharing is key to this.

Schoen Clinic York comprises 15 en-suite inpatient bedrooms in addition to tranquil, welcoming communal spaces, an occupational therapy kitchen, daily living room, a quiet room and a peaceful talking therapy room. Residents also have access to landscaped gardens that are safe, secure and secluded.

A multidisciplinary team of eating disorder experts

Our eating disorder specialists work together as a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) keeping the patient at the centre of everything they do. This team includes Consultant Psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Dietitians, Social Workers and specially trained nursing staff.

Treating an eating disorder: a multi-disciplinary approach

Our treatment model is based on the principle that no single intervention is sufficient on its own, to overcome an eating disorder. It consists of multiple components which all fit together. An integrated approach is used to address all the aspects and impacts of an eating disorder; behaviour, emotions, consequences, the relationship to life events and the effect on loved ones.

At the core of this model is the multidisciplinary team (MDT). The MDT brings together all the different supports and interventions, considers how everything is working, enabling the patient to share their views and plans for ongoing care once returning home.

Each patient is allocated to an MDT on admission and will be invited to weekly meetings, where they will be encouraged to participate and share their views. Additionally, there will be a Care Programme Approach (CPA) every six to eight weeks, where treatment goals and care will be thoroughly reviewed, incorporating the patient's views. Family and carers are welcome to join these meetings and the community team will usually attend to ensure everyone is working together, treatment goals are clear and hospital admission is no longer than necessary.

Our Care Quality Commission (CQC) rating

A Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection was recently carried out at Schoen Clinic York.

In the report from 22nd April 2022, a rating of Inadequate was issued and we immediately commenced close working with the CQC to take all steps required to implement immediate changes and improvements. The issues initially raised were quickly addressed with corrective action taken within 4 weeks and we welcome the CQC to return at any time to allow us to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to delivering the highest possible standard of quality patient care.

We will closely monitor the ongoing improvements within our York service to ensure our group benchmark of a Good or Outstanding CQC rating is reached at the earliest possible opportunity.
