Private children's neurodevelopmental assessments in London
Expert insight into your child’s development, behaviour and learning needs.
What is a neurodevelopmental assessment?
At Schoen Clinic Chelsea, we understand how worrying it can be when your child isn't reaching expected milestones, struggling at school, or facing challenges with behaviour. Our Neurodevelopmental Assessments, led by Consultant Paediatrician Dr Joe Datt, provide a clear picture of your child’s development and practical steps to support their wellbeing and success.
This detailed, 90-minute appointment explores a child’s history from birth through to the present day, identifying developmental delays, learning difficulties, or behavioural concerns and offering guidance on how to help.
A neurodevelopmental assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of a child’s development across multiple areas including:
-
Developmental milestones (e.g. walking, talking, toileting)
-
Speech and language development
-
Cognitive function and learning skills
-
Behaviour and emotional regulation
-
Physical growth and nutrition
The assessment also includes screening for common neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and learning disabilities.
Please note: This is not a Full Autism or Full ADHD Diagnostic Assessment. If a formal diagnosis is required, Dr Datt will guide you on appropriate next steps and referrals.

Why might my child need a neurodevelopmental assessment?
You may want to consider a neurodevelopmental assessment if:
-
Your child is falling behind at school without a clear reason
-
They struggle with concentration, memory, or following instructions
-
Teachers or caregivers have raised concerns about behaviour or development
-
You’ve noticed delays in talking, coordination, or emotional maturity
-
There are subtle signs of autism or ADHD but no formal diagnosis
Early identification of difficulties can make a significant difference in your child’s progress, helping them access the right support at the right time.

What to expect during the appointment
Your child’s assessment is carried out by Dr Joe Datt, a leading London-based Consultant Paediatrician with extensive experience in child development, learning difficulties, neurodiversity and rare paediatric neurological conditions.
Dr Datt sees children of a wide range of ages for neurodevelopmental assessments, from as young as 3 or 4 years old, through primary school ages (6–11), and into the teenage years.
The assessment is always tailored to the child’s stage of development and current concerns, whether behavioural, learning-related, or emotional.
The 90-minute appointment includes:
-
A full developmental history from pregnancy through to the present
-
Review of milestones and learning progress
-
Observations and screening for neurodevelopmental conditions
-
Practical advice on nutrition, sleep, behaviour and school support
-
Personalised next steps and referral recommendations
“Parents often tell me it’s the first time anyone has ever gone through their child’s full history, right from pregnancy, looking at what the pregnancy was like, were there any problems down to delivery and right through their early years. That in itself can be incredibly helpful." - Dr Joe Datt
A recent case: identifying learning needs early
In a recent case, Dr Datt saw an 8-year-old boy whose parents and teachers were concerned he wasn’t achieving expected levels in school. No one had been able to pinpoint the cause, and his parents didn’t know where to turn.
Through the neurodevelopmental assessment, Dr Datt identified a pattern of missed developmental milestones between the ages of 4 and 5, an early red flag that had gone unnoticed. He was then able to recommend:
-
Speech and language therapy
-
Occupational therapy for fine motor and coordination challenges
-
Further genetic testing and blood tests to explore any underlying causes
This personalised plan helped the family access the support their child needed, while also giving them reassurance and clarity.
“It’s not just about identifying a condition, it’s about building a support network. Whether that’s specialist therapy, practical strategies at home, or further diagnostic assessments, I help parents understand what steps will make the most impact.” - Dr Joe Datt
