Private children's neurodevelopmental assessments in London
Expert insight into your child’s development, behaviour and learning needs.
What is a neurodevelopmental assessment?
At Schoen Clinic Chelsea, we understand how worrying it can be when a child is not meeting expected milestones, is struggling at school or is showing behavioural or emotional difficulties.
Our Neurodevelopmental Assessments, led by Consultant Paediatrician Dr Joe Datt, provide clear answers about your child’s development and practical next steps to support their progress.
This detailed 90-minute evaluation reviews a child’s developmental history from birth to the present day. It helps identify:
-
Developmental delays
-
Learning difficulties
-
Behavioural concerns
-
Emotional or social challenges
-
Early signs of neurodevelopmental conditions
Areas assessed include:
-
Developmental milestones (walking, talking, toileting)
-
Speech and language development
-
Cognitive skills and learning abilities
-
Behaviour and emotional regulation
-
Nutrition, growth and physical development
Screening is also included for conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, and learning disabilities.
Please note: This is not a Full Autism or Full ADHD Diagnostic Assessment. If a formal diagnosis is required, Dr Datt will explain the next best steps.

Why your child might need a neurodevelopmental assessment
You may want to consider an assessment if:
-
Your child is falling behind academically
-
They struggle with attention, memory or instructions
-
Teachers or carers have raised behavioural or learning concerns
-
You’ve noticed delays in speech, coordination or emotional maturity
-
There are subtle signs of autism or ADHD without a formal diagnosis
Early identification helps children access the right support at the right time — often transforming their confidence and long-term outcomes.

“Parents often tell me it’s the first time anyone has really gone through their child’s full history. That alone can be incredibly helpful.” — Dr Joe Datt
Case example: identifying learning needs early
Dr Datt recently assessed an 8-year-old boy who was falling behind at school. Teachers had raised concerns but no one could identify the underlying reason.
During the neurodevelopmental assessment, Dr Datt found several missed developmental milestones between ages 4 and 5 — a key early warning sign.
He recommended:
-
Speech and Language Therapy
-
Occupational therapy for fine motor and coordination issues
-
Genetic and blood testing to explore potential underlying causes
This support plan gave the family clarity, reassurance and a clear roadmap forward.
“It’s not just about identifying a condition, it’s about building a support network. Whether that’s specialist therapy, practical strategies at home, or further diagnostic assessments, I help parents understand what steps will make the most impact.” - Dr Joe Datt
