PRIVATE OSFED TREATMENT FOR CHILDREN, TEENS AND YOUNG PEOPLE (AGED 8-18) | OSFED TREATMENT CENTRE IN BIRMINGHAM

Specialised treatment in Birmingham for children, teens and young people with OSFED

Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED) is a condition which describes a range of eating disorders that do not meet the diagnostic criteria for other forms of disordered eating such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder.

Treatment for OSFED in children and young people is critical as it can negatively impact their physical health, psychological well-being and social functioning. Treatments for children and young people with OSFED include both medical and psychological interventions. Medical treatment involves addressing medical complications that may arise as a result of poor nutrition, such as malnutrition, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalances.

Our eating disorder specialists in Birmingham are experts in treating various eating disorders, including OSFED.

Diagnosing OSFED in children, teens and young people

The diagnosis of OSFED in young people is generally done through a comprehensive assessment, which includes interviews with the individual, their parents or caregivers, and mental health professionals.

If a diagnosis has not yet been made, our OSFED specialists in Birmingham are available to help. The assessment usually involves a medical evaluation, a psychiatric evaluation, and an assessment of the child or young person's eating habits, behaviours, and attitudes towards food.

  • Medical evaluation: A medical evaluation is a critical step in diagnosing OSFED, as nutrition deficiencies or underlying medical conditions can cause or exacerbate eating disorders.
  • Psychiatric evaluation: Another essential component of the assessment process. Our OSFED specialist at Schoen Clinic Newbridge will assess the individual's mental health and gather information about their eating behaviours, exercise habits, and their relationship with food. They will also evaluate any underlying psychological or emotional issues that may be contributing to the individual's disordered eating behaviour.

To accurately diagnose OSFED, our assessment also includes a comprehensive review of the individual's eating habits, behaviours, and attitudes towards food. This process typically involves the use of standardised questionnaires which focus on disordered eating behaviours, such as binge eating, purging, restrictive eating, and the use of laxatives or diuretics.

Recovering from OSFED is possible

OSFED remains a challenging diagnosis for children, teens and young people, and diagnosing it requires careful consideration and assessment by experienced professionals.

Early detection and intervention are crucial to prevent the disorder from developing into a more severe and chronic condition.

With the right diagnosis and treatment, children and young people with OSFED can recover and restore their physical and emotional health.

OSFED diagnosis in Birmingham

OSFED is a broad category that encompasses various eating disorders that do not meet the diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder.

OSFED is diagnosed when a child or young person exhibits disordered eating behaviour that causes significant distress or impairment, but their symptoms do not fit into the criteria for the three aforementioned eating disorders.

We utilise standardised diagnostic criteria and assessments at Schoen Clinic Newbridge, which are critical in diagnosing OSFED in young people. These tools provide a clear framework for identifying the specific disordered eating behaviours and patterns that may be occurring.

Additionally, we work as a multidisciplinary team for the benefit of each patient. Our team offers a wealth of knowledge from a variety of experts who specialise in the treatment of young people with OSFED to ensure a comprehensive assessment and an effective treatment plan.

OSFED treatment in Birmingham

At Schoen Clinic Newbridge, our treatments for OSFED in children and young people include both medical and psychological interventions. Medical treatment involves addressing medical complications that may arise as a result of poor nutrition, such as malnutrition, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalances. Psychological interventions are also an essential aspect of our treatment for OSFED in children and young people.

The primary goals of psychological interventions are to increase awareness and understanding of the disorder, develop coping skills, and promote healthy eating behaviours. The two most common psychological treatments we employ for OSFED are Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Family-Based Treatment (FBT).

At Schoen Clinic Newbridge in Birmingham, our OSFED specialists work with patients, parents and families to develop personalised treatment plans for young people with OSFED to ensure the best possible outcomes from treatment.

OSFED treatment options at Schoen Clinic Newbridge

Specialists agree that eating disorders are a type of coping mechanism in which children and young people utilise their control over food to deal with difficult emotions and other events.

We understand that each individual is different and that a variety of factors could cause a young person to develop OSFED. Because of this, each patient receives a personalised OSFED therapy plan.

We provide a variety of therapy pathways at our OSFED treatment facility in Birmingham, depending on the age of the young person and the stage of OSFED development.

  • Inpatient OSFED treatment - Inpatient treatment is generally best suited for children and teens with severely developed OSFED.
  • Daycare OSFED treatment - Children and teens who need highly specialised treatment for OSFED, but don't require round-the-clock care may benefit from our comprehensive daycare programme.

Our approach to highly specialised OSFED treatment

Our treatment programme at Schoen Clinic Newbridge is organised around two main goals: gaining the ability to eat normally and enabling more constructive emotional expression.

The pace at which each individual completes the programme is decided upon by the young person and key workers while also taking into account their physical health and well-being.

All treatment plans will include the following common elements:

  • Monitoring and management of physical and mental state
  • Weight restoration as determined by MDT
  • Group and individual therapies of young person’s own notes
  • Regular meetings with key nurses and colleagues
  • Family meetings and therapy where appropriate
  • Care Programme Approach meetings and other review meetings as appropriate.

We've made it our Purpose to provide the best individualised specialist care for every patient, helping people feel better and recover faster. At Schoen Clinic, we tailor our therapies to meet the needs of each patient because we want to help individuals return to their normal lives as quickly as possible.

All elements of the programme can be adapted to suit individual needs, in discussion with our team of leading OSFED specialists. An initial treatment plan will be agreed upon before any treatment commences.

OSFED therapies for children and young people in Birmingham

Psychological therapies are the cornerstone in the management of Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED). As each young person is unique, we offer a wholly tailored approach to OSFED therapy. Treatment may include all or some of the following:

  • Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) -  An evidence-based therapy that focuses on identifying and challenging the maladaptive thoughts and behaviours associated with eating disorders. In children and young people, CBT may involve parent education and teaching the individual skills to manage anxiety and stress around food.
  • Family-Based Treatment (FBT) - Also known as the Maudsley approach, family-based intervention empowers parents to take an active role in their child's recovery. In FBT, parents work with our Parent Practitioners and Family Therapists to support their child's nutrition and monitor their weight gain. As the child progresses through treatment, the parents transfer responsibility for eating back to the child.
  • Other psychological interventions that may be helpful for OSFED in children and young people include Dialectical-Behavioural Therapy (DBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), and psychodynamic therapy. These therapies may be used in conjunction with CBT or FBT to address co-occurring mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety.
  • Nutritional interventions are meant to assist children and young people in developing a positive relationship with food. The development of healthy eating habits, the elimination of problematic diets, and the prevention of binge eating can all be assisted by nutritional counselling, meal planning, and education. Our dietitians at Schoen Clinic Newbridge provide nutritional interventions and have experience treating eating problems.
