About the Role

Schoen Clinic York is pleased to offer an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Consultant Psychiatrist.

As a Consultant Psychiatrist you will be medically responsible for all inpatients and will be the Responsible Clinician for all detained inpatients (MHA 1983). You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and will participate in weekly MDT meetings, where all key decisions will be made regarding care and treatment. Support, mentor and train the Speciality Doctor working under your clinical supervision. Ensure that the list of duties are completed by a suitably qualified doctor and in their absence this will fall to the overseeing Consultant.

Key responsibilities:

To support the service with its growth plan by having a caseload of day care patients and outpatients, participate in the on call rota 1:4 and provide additional support when the Speciality Doctor is 1st medical cover on the rota. Further duties will include (but not limited to):


  • Formulate an initial care plan with the team on admission and complete the Agreement to Treatment form

  • Admit patients, including initial mental state examination and physical examination

  • Continue to develop an individual formulation for each patient, in conjunction with other team members

  • ​Agree initial observation levels and a specific care plan for the time period prior to the first MDT meeting

  • ​Medically examine each patient as per the unit’s physical assessment protocol

  • Assess, treat and monitor psychiatric aspects of eating disorders including core psychopathology and co-morbid disorders such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, personality disorder and autism spectrum disorder.

  • Take lead responsibility for the physical health of patients, arrange investigations and refer to other services as required

  • Assess and manage physical complications of eating disorders

  • Monitor and evaluate individual treatment plans with the MDT in order to ensure safe and effective practice in the best interests of the patient and their family

  • Review care plans with the multidisciplinary team and agree outcomes at the MDT meeting

  • Carry out a weekly assessment of risk with the MDT

  • Prescribe and monitor medication appropriately in the light of relevant guidelines, including prescribing which extends beyond the usual psychiatric formulary

Skills & requirements

The successful candidate will have a specialist registration with the General Medical Council and a license to practice.

  • MRCPsych or equivalent

  • Approved Clinician status or willingness to achieve this

  • Registration for CPD with the Royal College of Psychiatrists and in good standing

  • Knowledge of psychopharmacology as applied to eating disorders

  • Knowledge of the physical and nutritional complications of eating disorders and their management

  • High degree of self-awareness and ability to reflect on own emotional responses to patients

  • Willingness to work as part of a multidisciplinary team

  • Minimum of one years’ experience of eating disorders as a higher trainee or equivalent

  • Experience of a variety of psychotherapeutic approaches used in the treatment of eating disorders

  • Experience of the management of refeeding in severely underweight patients

We are currently based on the ground floor of Minster Grange, and in July 2024 will be expanding to cover the full building with other service lines including Dementia care.
