Dr Tony Winston

Dr Winston is Medical Director at Schoen Clinic UK and is a consultant in eating disorders at Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership Trust, where he has developed an innovative inpatient and outpatient eating disorders unit. He has many years’ experience of treating young people with eating disorders, including eight years as a full-time NHS consultant in the specialty.

He qualified in medicine in 1987 and undertook postgraduate training in general medicine, psychiatry and psychotherapy. He spent four years as lecturer in the Psychiatry of Eating Disorders at the University of Leicester and Honorary Senior Registrar in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy.

Dr Winston’s particular interests are in psychodynamic psychotherapy, medical and nutritional complications of eating disorders and eating disorders in people with diabetes.

He leads an active research programme, which is currently investigating hormonal changes during re-feeding, trace element deficiency in anorexia nervosa and the use of caffeine by people with eating disorders.

Dr Winston has published extensively on both eating disorders and psychotherapy and was the lead author of the Guidelines for the Nutritional Management of Anorexia Nervosa, published by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
