Our clinic is dedicated to providing comprehensive assessments for children, teenagers and adolescents with ADHD, ensuring the most accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment plans.

We recognise the importance of accurate ADHD assessment and diagnosis to ensure appropriate interventions and support. We also understand that if ADHD is not present, this needs to be objectively identified and alternative support considered.

At Schoen Clinic Chelsea, our private assessments are for children (from 6 years) and teens with suspected ADHD so that an accurate diagnosis can be made to rule ADHD in or out.

We're a mental health clinic specialising in the assessment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that impacts an individual's capacity to sustain attention, manage impulsive behaviours, and regulate activity levels. Typically emerging in childhood and often persisting into adulthood, ADHD presents challenges such as inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. These factors can notably affect academic performance, social interactions, and overall well-being.

Amid heightened ADHD awareness, evident through the proliferation of #ADHD on social media platforms with billions of views, many youngsters engage in self-diagnosis. However, for a precise evaluation, consulting a Consultant Psychiatrist for a comprehensive diagnostic assessment is indispensable. It's important that this assessment involves meeting with the child in person for a valid and accurate viewpoint.

At Schoen Clinic Chelsea, we offer full ADHD assessments with highly experienced Consultant Psychiatrists. Once a diagnosis has been made (or ruled out), children and teens can benefit from various treatment options which can be discussed with them.

To get started with a private ADHD assessment, simply fill out our online pre-screening questionnaire at any time to suit you.

Symptoms and signs of ADHD in children

Understanding the signs and symptoms of ADHD in children and teenagers is pivotal in promoting timely intervention and effective management.

ADHD, or Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects an individual's ability to focus, control impulses, and regulate activity levels.

Here, we delve into the distinct categories of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, shedding light on the wide spectrum of symptoms to be aware of:

Inattention
  1. Difficulty sustaining attention: Struggling to stay focused on tasks, often leading to careless mistakes and incomplete work.
  2. Easily distracted: Being easily sidetracked by irrelevant stimuli, making concentration challenging.
  3. Poor organisation: Exhibiting difficulties in organizing tasks, activities, and belongings, often resulting in messy environments.
  4. Forgetfulness: Frequently forgetting daily responsibilities, assignments, or appointments.
  5. Avoidance of mental effort: Displaying an aversion to tasks requiring sustained mental effort, like schoolwork.
Hyperactivity
  1. Restlessness: Being in constant motion, whether fidgeting, tapping, or squirming while seated.
  2. Inability to stay still: Difficulty staying seated when expected, even in situations requiring quiet and stillness.
  3. Excessive talking: Engaging in non-stop talking, often interrupting others and struggling to take turns in conversations.
  4. Impulsiveness: Acting without considering the consequences, blurting out answers, or interrupting others frequently.
  5. Difficulty engaging in quiet activities: Finding it hard to engage in calm activities like reading or playing quietly, often seeking more stimulating tasks.
Impulsivity
  1. Acting without thinking: Acting on immediate urges without considering potential outcomes, leading to impulsive decisions.
  2. Difficulty waiting turns: Struggling to wait patiently, whether in lines or during group activities.
  3. Interrupting others: Frequently interrupting conversations, games, or tasks of others.
  4. Risk-taking: Engaging in risky activities without assessing potential dangers or consequences.
  5. Inability to delay gratification: Finding it challenging to delay rewards, seeking immediate satisfaction.

It is important to note that each individual with ADHD may present a unique combination of these symptoms, varying in severity and frequency.

The presence of these symptoms must also be consistent and significantly impair functioning across different settings, such as school, home, and social interactions.

If you observe these patterns in your child or teen, seeking a thorough diagnostic assessment by a qualified Consultant Psychiatrist can provide clarity and guidance for appropriate management strategies.

At Schoen Clinic Chelsea, we specialise in comprehensive ADHD assessments for children and teenagers, facilitating accurate diagnosis and personalised care.

I'm worried my child might have ADHD

If you're observing behaviours in your child that align with the symptoms mentioned above, it's natural to have concerns. However, it's important to remember that the presence of these symptoms doesn't automatically indicate that your child has ADHD. The spectrum of human behaviour is diverse, and these signs can stem from various factors.

For an accurate understanding, seeking a comprehensive medical diagnosis is essential. A qualified Consultant Psychiatrist specialises in assessing these symptoms within a broader context, ensuring an informed evaluation. Self-diagnosing, despite the wealth of information available, can be misleading and counterproductive.

At Schoen Clinic Chelsea, we emphasize the significance of a professional assessment. Our experienced team is dedicated to providing thorough ADHD assessments, enabling accurate diagnoses and personalised guidance for your child's wellbeing and future, whether a diagnosis of ADHD is confirmed or not.

What to expect from an ADHD assessment at Schoen Clinic Chelsea

We firmly believe that a full ADHD assessment is essential for accurate diagnosis and informed decision-making.

Once an ADHD assessment appointment is scheduled with our Schoen Clinic Chelsea team, we will provide initial questionnaires to be completed before the appointment. These questionnaires help our Consultant Psychiatrists gain valuable insights before the full assessment.

Subsequently, one of our dedicated Consultant Psychiatrists will review the provided questionnaire before the comprehensive assessment occurs.

Following the assessment, our team remains dedicated to your journey. If an ADHD diagnosis is made, we provide a thorough explanation and support, emphasising that our focus is on understanding and empowering rather than labelling.

We'll include detailed guidance on tailored treatment plans, ongoing support, and building a network of resources for both the child and their family.

We understand that every individual is unique so we take the time to listen, understand and support our patients throughout the assessment process. We also provide reassurance for young people who receive the diagnosis, that awareness around neurodiversity is improving and the idea is not to label them, but to consider how best to support them.

If a diagnosis of ADHD has been ruled out, we'll work with you to find the most suitable plan to assist your child going forward.

Whatever the diagnosis, we support our patients to access the right treatment to achieve the best possible outcome. At Schoen Clinic Chelsea, our commitment extends beyond diagnosis—to a future where each child's unique strengths and needs are comprehensively addressed.

What the test for ADHD for children and teens involves

Our ADHD assessment for children and teenagers at Schoen Clinic Chelsea is a meticulous and comprehensive process designed to provide a holistic view of the individual's symptoms and needs. Carried out by our experienced Consultant Psychiatrists, the assessment involves a combination of evidence-based methodologies to ensure a well-informed decision.

The in-person assessment, typically lasting around 60 minutes, is conducted in a warm and welcoming environment at our London ADHD clinic for children.

Following this, there is a separate 30-minute follow-up appointment required to discuss the outcome and to signpost for any ongoing treatment (if required), once further information has been obtained from parent/carers and school.

The assessment encompasses in-depth clinical interviews with both the young person and their caregiver, enabling us to gather insights from various perspectives. We employ behavioural observations to assess real-life interactions and reactions. Additionally, rating scales and questionnaires are utilised to gather standardised information about the individual's behaviours across different settings.

Our assessment process also considers potential coexisting conditions. This thorough evaluation aids in distinguishing ADHD symptoms from those of other conditions, ensuring accuracy in diagnosis.

By combining these diverse assessment tools, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the individual's cognitive and emotional functioning. Our goal is to empower families with the most accurate diagnosis, enabling them to make informed decisions regarding treatment and support.

Throughout the process, our compassionate team is dedicated to creating a supportive and comfortable environment, ensuring that children and teenagers feel at ease while undergoing the assessment.

Getting a medical diagnosis for child ADHD in London

Following the child or teen ADHD assessment at our private mental health clinic in London, we'll share the results with them (depending on their age and wishes), along with their family, parents, caregiver(s), or advocate.

Additionally, any interventions which may be suitable for the requirements of the teenager/young person will be identified and discussed.

Any information which may enable them to get support at home and at school will be included in a thorough report which includes the assessment results and recommendations.

With consent, we'll share information with their GP and where appropriate, professionals in health/social care and anyone supporting them.

We'll schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss the findings from the report with a Consultant Psychiatrist to answer any questions and outline the next steps.

Incidence of ADHD in boys compared to girls

Research indicates that ADHD diagnosis is more commonly observed in boys, with approximately twice as many boys (13%) being diagnosed compared to girls (6%).

This discrepancy may be influenced by factors such as varying symptom presentation between genders and the potential underdiagnosis of girls due to differences in symptom expression.

It's important to recognise that ADHD manifests uniquely in each individual, regardless of gender.

At Schoen Clinic Chelsea, our diagnostic process is tailored to comprehensively assess symptoms and needs, ensuring accurate diagnosis and personalised support for every child and teen.
